Implementing Western Ideas in Papua New Guinea

Alfred Tivinarlik

Alfred Tivinarlik (PhD ’00) was already a professor of education when he came to Iowa to study Educational Administration. He wanted to learn how to implement Western ideas into a new, forward-looking university in Papua New Guinea.

Associate Professor Carolyn Wanat says Tivinarlik was a model student.

“He not only has great intellectual curiosity and excellent scholarship, but he is an interesting person, a dedicated student, and a delight to work with,” Wanat said. “I know I learned as much as he did.”

Tivinarlik is now dean of the Faculty of Education at the new Divine Word University in Madang, Papua New Guinea, and serves as pro-vice president of the St Benedict’s Campus Wewak. He also teaches in the university’s graduate programs, as well as provides doctoral student supervision in Papua New Guinea and Australia.

Tivinarlik says the St. Benedict’s campus is similar to a community college with teacher training as its main focus. Currently, the school offers a two-year diploma in primary teaching, but plans include developing a four-year bachelor’s degree program within the next few years.

“It is exciting to work where I am creating something new all the time,” Tivinarlik said.
