Perhaps Henry David Thoreau said it best when he wrote, “The world is but a canvas to the imagination.” To me, this has always been the attitude at The University of Iowa College of Education.

Throughout its rich history, College faculty, staff, students, and alumni have used their imagination to create innovative tools and resources. From the invention of the optical scanner and development of the Iowa Testing Programs to the designing of the e Portfolio™ evaluation tool and establishment of ICATER, the College’s assistive technology center, originality and creativity abound.

In his recent article, “ Creative Teaching in the Shadow of the Standards,” Ron Ritchhart wrote, “ Creative teachers teach toward both the head and the heart, fostering an intellectual passion. Creative classrooms function as learning communities where the contributions and special talents of all individuals are respected and valued.”

I believe this point of view applies to more than teachers and classrooms, but also to counselors and psychologists in their offices and clinics. By appreciating individuality and keeping an open mind, a deeper understanding is gained. By creating environments where fresh ideas are encouraged, people become engaged and motivated. Together, these key concepts ultimately foster success.

So, try to view life’s challenges as a blank canvas, limited only by your imagination. Go beyond the norm, discover new approaches, and most of all, enjoy the fruits of your labor.
