Navy WAVE, Dedicated Teacher

Cuthbertson

Madeline Burks Cuthbertson (MA ’49), who lived her life first and foremost a teacher, died on April 29, 2006 , in Austin , Texas .

After receiving her B.A. in education from Troy State Teachers College in May, 1941, Cuthbertson taught in elementary schools in Florida and Alabama .

In WWII she served in the WAVES (Women Accepted for Emergency Volunteer Service), a U.S. Navy unit for women, where she was promoted to lieutenant, logging numerous hours as one of the country’s first female naval navigators. After release from active service, Cuthbertson pursued a master’s degree at The University of Iowa, where she joined the Pi Lambda Theta International Honor Society and Professional Association in Education, eventually becoming its president.

Her teaching career moved as she followed her husband’s career from Mason City , Iowa , to Albion , Nebraska , and later Newport , Arkansas . While in Dallas , Texas , she taught at Sunset High School , and eventually assumed chairmanship of the mathematics department at Houston ’s Reagan High School . Her focus was advanced mathematics, which she loved to teach. Algebra, geometry, slide rule, and number sense all were her areas of expertise.

She retired from teaching in 1981, and volunteered over 1,000 hours at Houston ’s M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in her retirement. In December, 2003, as she drifted into Alzheimers Disease, a letter arrived from a student from years past, now an engineer. In it, he thanked her for the great math education she had given him, and told how her enthusiasm had impacted his future career choice.

This was exactly what drove her—an enthusiasm for life and learning.
