Make
a commitment to service.
Service is not about money or prestige. It’s about
doing for others in ways that eventually enables them to
do for themselves. It’s about broadening
your vision of community and developing a sense of responsibility beyond your
own immediate needs. It is about modesty, quiet integrity, and helping others
to shine.
The
alumni, students, and faculty featured in this issue
are specialists in their fields, which affords them
unique opportunities
for service. But it’s not
only about what they do; it’s about who they are. They, like all of us,
operate from a place of optimism, a sense of shared humanity, and a sincere
belief in service.
So, leave your comfort zone and get involved. Learn about other cultures. Listen
to the problems, losses, and dreams of our communities and help achieve their
goals. Gain an understanding of people with varying levels of abilities and circumstances.
This broader perspective will foster tolerance and narrow the boundaries between
races, cultures, and classes and has the potential to change the world as we
know it.
By persevering with this vision, you will inspire others to think more about
their communities, their human responsibilities, and the satisfaction that helping
others can bring.
Make a commitment to service.
