Harold B. Engen, Jr. What a Wonderful Life

Engen
Engen remembered as a lifelong mentor and friend.

Counseling Education Professor Emeritus Harold Engen , 76, who passed away March 4, 2005, was a progressive-minded professor and practitioner, as well as an occasional poet, capable cook, and tremendous friend. Even in his retirement, Engen remained active as an innovative educator and contributor to the community.

Engen received his master's and doctorate degrees from the University of South Dakota and was a teacher, high school principal, and county guidance counselor before coming to The University of Iowa in 1964. He had a joint appointment with the College of Education as an assistant professor and with University High School as the first and only head of the high school's guidance program. Under Engen's direction, both programs were soon recognized as revolutionary.

Engen started using video to enhance his teaching in the early 1960s. Realizing that students needed direct observation, not just theory to become good counselors, he taped and played back student counseling scenarios for discussion. When the concept of microcounseling was introduced in the 1970s, Engen created a formal set of instructional videos-each addressing a specific counseling technique such as observing the client's body language and asking questions properly. These videos pushed available technology to the edge.

"I've always used the latest technology," said Engen, who-in the midst of his retirement-facilitated the creation of one of the first online counseling skill development courses. While adapting his course for online learners, he simultaneously pursued the development of new digital technology at the University's Center for Credit Programs-a lot of work for a retired professor. But Engen never minded extra work. He'd say, "It's not work when you're doing something you thoroughly enjoy and feel is beneficial to students."

Engen had a tremendous impact on his graduate students. He always had words of encouragement, support, and a nudge when it was needed. He told them that he came with a "Lifetime Guarantee," offering his students the opportunity to consult with him or seek his guidance at any time, on any topic-for life. In other words, his mentoring did not end upon graduation.

"I find that I use Harold's style of teaching, his little acts of kindness, and his sense of humor throughout all aspects of my academic and personal life," said Jean Casey (PhD '86), associate professor at State University of New York at Oswego. "I offer my graduate students a 'Lifetime Guarantee,' and I now have a former student who just finished his doctorate and tells me that he will be offering his students a 'Lifetime Guarantee' as well. Harold's tradition is living on. He truly left an indelible, wonderful legacy for all of us."

Long-time friend and colleague Professor Emeritus Leonard Feldt says Engen was a wonderful example of how rewarding life can be in retirement.

"Harold continued to contribute his services to causes that could use his expertise," Feldt said. "He learned new skills, such as playing the clarinet and writing poetry where his optimistic outlook on life could be expressed.and he always found time for his students, family, and friends."

What a Wonderful World

What would this world have been like without you?
Would we have been missed;
What would our friends and family do?
I guess the WORLD would have survived, there is no way to know.
I have enjoyed being here
I can tell you that is so;
I have enjoyed my family and friends
And what I have done.
I am sure glad I did not miss all the fun!
LIKE THEY SAY-WHAT A WONDERFUL WORLD THIS HAS BEEN.
