No
one has to be an activist. And by definition, volunteering
is, well, voluntary. But where would we be without individuals
who are willing to do more than is required? Because I’m
so proud of the activism and volunteerism of The University
of Iowa College of Education faculty, staff, students, and
alumni, this issue is dedicated to those who go above and
beyond to make our world a better place.
It is awe inspiring to think of the impact those affiliated
with the College and the University have around the globe.
The University of Iowa recently ranked 16th among American
colleges and universities in Washington Monthly magazine’s
measure of the number of students and graduates involved in
community service work. “Universities should be engines
of social mobility; they should produce the academic minds
and scientific research that advance knowledge and drive economic
growth; and they should inculcate and encourage an ethic of
service,” the editors wrote.
Before applying for admission to the College’s Teacher
Education Program, each student must complete 10 volunteer
hours. This admissions requirement emphasizes the College’s
dedication to volunteerism and ensures that our students begin
their studies with the understanding that service and making
a positive influence in the lives of others is at the core
of a well-rounded education.
Our faculty and staff model that understanding as well, offering
students opportunities for hands-on learning while making
real-world effects. Faculty members also model the importance
of service through their research and community activities.
And based on the high levels of volunteerism and activism
among our alumni, it’s clear that the message is getting
through.
Buddha said, “Teach this triple truth to all: A generous
heart, kind speech, and a life of service and compassion are
the things which renew humanity.” I hope the stories
in this magazine will inspire everyone to take that first
step, see where there is a need, and make a difference.
