New Challenges for Accomplished Educator
Kelly builds teaching confidence in educators across campus. |
A
new position for Mitch Kelly (BA ’87,
MSW ’91, PhD ’95) brings exciting changes for
the long-time UI College of Education lecturer as well as
for the UI Graduate College.
Kelly, who has taught at the UI since 1992, will continue
teaching “Educational Psychology and Measurement,”
and will begin teaching the new course, “College Teaching
Seminar,” and direct the new Office of Graduate Teaching
Excellence.
UI College of Education Dean Sandra Bowman Damico said Kelly’s
proven strengths in teaching will benefit the entire Graduate
College as he helps train graduate teaching assistants and
graduate students interested in developing teaching skills
for adult learners.
“Whenever you talk to students, they always say Dr.
Kelly was one of the most outstanding professors they had
in the college,” Damico said.
In addition to teaching courses and directing the Office of
Graduate Teaching Excellence, Kelly will develop partnerships
with teaching practicum sites in the community and surrounding
areas, serve as a liaison with the Graduate College regarding
the College Teaching Certificate program, and facilitate coordination
among college departments regarding teaching assistant training
and supervision.
Kelly, whose new job title is clinical associate professor,
said he’s excited to get started in his new role.
“My goal is to have our graduate students feel well
prepared to face their first classroom,” he said. “I
believe knowledge builds confidence and with confidence comes
success in the classroom.”
