College of Education Clinical Instructor Leslie Flynn assembled 17 UI faculty and students to serve as coaches, mentors, and state event supervisors at the Science Olympiad, an annual statewide science tournament for Iowa’s middle and high school students.
Professors Debora Liddell and Malik Henfield received funding to further their research instruments.
Twenty faculty members received support to fund projects that represent educational research at its best: Critical, purposeful, and solutions oriented. Faculty research awards went to: Saba Ali, Elizabeth Altmaier, David Bills, Allison Bruhn, Mary Cohen, Carolyn Colvin, David Duys, Cory Forbes, Kathryn Gerken, Kristen Missall, Soonhye Park, Lia Plakans, Ann Marie Garcia Santos, Katrina Sanders, Bonnie Sunstein, Amanda Thein, Volker Thomas, Pamela Wesely, Kathryn Whitmore, and Suzanne Woods-Groves.
American Educational Research Association Awards—Dr. Michael Hevel received the 2011 Outstanding Dissertation Award and Dr. Won-Chan Lee received the 2011 Outstanding Reviewer Award.
National Science Education Leadership Association Awards—Emeritus Professor Robert E. Yager received the Outstanding Science Education Leader Award for his dedication to improving science education.
Association of Fraternal Leadership and Values Awards—Higher Education and Student Affairs graduate student, Rebecca Ingraham, won the Order of the Omega Case Study Competition.
Counseling Psychology Doctoral Student Cortney Cornick and Professor Elizabeth Altmaier find better understanding of distress and forgiveness.
Two gifts of $500,000 each helped the Connie Belin and Jacqueline N. Blank International Center for Gifted Education and Talent Development make major headway in its $2.5 million fundraising campaign to celebrate the center’s 25th anniversary in 2013. Gifts came from the children of Connie and David Belin and Mary Bucksbaum Scanlan.
