Textbook Review, Grade Four
Scott Foresman: Addison Wesley
Math
Strengths
- I like how the beginning of each chapter starts with a team project. I think it is good to have students work together and learn from each other.
- I like the section in the chapter called “your choice” it gives the students a chance to solve the problem whichever way they choose.
- I like how the pictures and directions are age appropriate; I feel a fourth grader would enjoy this book.
- Each section has a “learn”, “check”, and “practice” area, which I think are all-important in the learning process.
- I like the tips, which are on almost every page; they help the students figure out the problems all by themselves.
- I like how the book goes through how to approach problem solving by giving systematic instructions and practice.
Weaknesses
- Many of the pages have a lot of pictures, which I am sure kids like, however, I think the space could have been used more effectively.
- I like that there is a journal section but I think that maybe it appears too many times; it is on almost every page. I think time could be better spent solving problems.
- There are many word problems, which can be good, but I think there may be too many word problems and not enough numeration problems.
- The pages titled “math magazine” is fun and interesting but does not always pertain to math.
- I think the order of information in this book could be arranged a little better, for example I think all of the division sections should be kept together instead of putting some at the beginning and some at the end of the book.
- I think the review section at the end of each section/ chapter could be a little bit longer, this would ensure that students understand the information they have just learned.
