Textbook Review, Grade Four
Scott Foresman: Addison Wesley
Math

Strengths

  1. I like how the beginning of each chapter starts with a team project.  I think it is good to have students work together and learn from each other.
  2. I like the section in the chapter called “your choice” it gives the students a chance to solve the problem whichever way they choose.
  3. I like how the pictures and directions are age appropriate; I feel a fourth grader would enjoy this book.
  4. Each section has a “learn”, “check”, and “practice” area, which I think are all-important in the learning process.
  5. I like the tips, which are on almost every page; they help the students figure out the problems all by themselves.
  6. I like how the book goes through how to approach problem solving by giving systematic instructions and practice.

Weaknesses

  1. Many of the pages have a lot of pictures, which I am sure kids like, however, I think the space could have been used more effectively.
  2. I like that there is a journal section but I think that maybe it appears too many times; it is on almost every page.  I think time could be better spent solving problems.
  3. There are many word problems, which can be good, but I think there may be too many word problems and not enough numeration problems.
  4. The pages titled “math magazine” is fun and interesting but does not always pertain to math.
  5. I think the order of information in this book could be arranged a little better, for example I think all of the division sections should be kept together instead of putting some at the beginning and some at the end of the book.
  6. I think the review section at the end of each section/ chapter could be a little bit longer, this would ensure that students understand the information they have just learned.
