Description
This grant was established to encourage excellence in research within the field of psychology concerning issues of diversity such as varied ethnic backgrounds, women's issues, ageism, sexual orientation and disability. Funds for this $1,500 grant must be used to support proposed research, rather than to reward a completed, or nearly completed dissertation. The recipient will be invited to serve on the selection committee for the following year's applicants. The APAGS Grant Selection Committee will review all abstracts. The winning applicant will be selected based upon the relevance of the study to diversity, with particular emphasis on important and emerging trends in the field; scholarly excellence, innovation and implications for theory, research and action; and methodological appropriateness.
Eligibility
APAGS grants are available to graduate student members of APAGS who are enrolled at least halftime as a student in good standing at a regionally accredited university. Students who join as a Graduate Student Affiliate are members of APAGS; students who are members of APA as undergraduate student affiliates, Associate Member or other member status must change their status to Graduate Student Affiliate prior to applying for this grant. Undergraduates are not eligible for these grants, nor are APAGS Committee members or task force chairs. Previous recipients of each award are not eligible to apply again for a period of five years.
Each application must include all of the following materials:
-
A cover letter (not to exceed two pages single-spaced) that includes background information about the applicant, the dissertation, why the applicant believes s/he should be awarded the grant (e.g. relevance of the project to the grant) and the applicant’s future educational and professional goals.
-
An abbreviated research proposal (not to exceed three pages single-spaced) that includes specific aims, background and significance, proposed research methodology, implications of proposed research and detailed budget.
-
An abbreviated curriculum vitae (not to exceed two pages single-spaced).
-
A letter of recommendation (not to exceed two pages single-spaced) supporting your application that addresses your qualifications, how your project will benefit the discipline and the likelihood that your research will help you meet your future educational and professional goals. All materials must be submitted for an application to be considered. Any applications that exceed the page limits (e.g. over two pages in a vita, over three pages for your proposal, or over two pages for a letter of recommendation) will not be scored.
Please note the online system will close at 11:59 a.m. (ET) on the day of the deadline; all application materials must be submitted at that time. No mail submissions will be accepted. If you are not an APAGS member at the time of submission you may attach a copy of the receipt you get when you join APA/APAGS electronically as proof of your membership. Letters of recommendation may be submitted separately via email by the deadline.
Submit your application online. All applicants will be notified of selection decisions in August.

Introduction to the Fellowship
The Doris Duke Fellowships for the Promotion of Child Well-Being are offered by Chapin Hall at the University of Chicago through the generous support of the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation. These fellowships are designed to identify and develop a new generation of leaders interested in and capable of creating practice and policy initiatives that will enhance child development and improve the nation's ability to prevent all forms of child maltreatment.
Fellows are selected from an open, competitive national application process each year; 15 fellowships are awarded annually. Each fellow receives an annual stipend of $30,000 for up to two years to support the completion of their dissertation and related research at their academic institution. Fellows are guided by an academic mentor whom they select; fellows also identify a policy or practice mentor to assist them in better understanding how to frame their research questions with an eye toward maximizing policy and practice relevance. For more information on selecting your academic mentor or policy mentor, please visit the Mentors page.
Who Should Apply
Because the promotion of child well-being and the prevention of child maltreatment require knowledge and collaboration from diverse fields, the program is multidisciplinary in scope and approach. Fellows are selected from a range of academic disciplines, including—-but not limited to—-child development, education, epidemiology, medicine, nursing, psychology, public health, public policy, social work, and sociology. Fellows' dissertations must be focused on an aspect of child well-being and the prevention of child maltreatment. Fellows will participate in two in-person meetings and several online webinars and learning activities during each fellowship year; additionally, fellows will work in a small group on a project. As such, applicants should be ready and excited to collaborate in an interdisciplinary peer learning network on a variety of projects.
Eligibility
Fellows must be enrolled in a doctoral program at an accredited United States academic institution. Fellows must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States, or must be authorized to work in the United States.

|
GPSG provides grants for individual graduate and professional student enrolled at the University of Iowa. Students may use grant money to travel, conduct research, or conduct a service project. While we do not place specific restrictions on the types of research, travel, or service that we will fund, successful applicants should be able to make a strong case for how their proposed research, service, or travel will contribute to their educational and/or professional success.
What can I use GPSG Grant funds for?
-
Research: the GPSG Grant will fund up to $1500 for expenses related to research projects. While we do not restrict research funding to dissertation projects, successful research proposals reflect a carefully crafted and feasible research plan. Recipients of grants for research have 6 months to use awarded funds.
-
Travel: the GPSG Grant will fund up to $500 for travel to conferences and workshops. You need not present a paper or project to receive funding, however, those not presenting should take additional care to identify the significance of conference attendance for your professional development. Successful applications make a strong case for the significance of attending the conference or workshop and do not rely on financial need alone to justify the request.
-
Service: the GPSG Grant will fund up to $1500 for expenses related to a service project. While only graduate and professional students may apply for and receive GPSG Grant funds, applicants may partner with other students to complete their service project. Priority will be given to projects having some tangible impact on the University of Iowa community. Successful applicants will demonstrate the importance of their service project and its connection with the UI community. Recipients of grants for service have one calendar year to use awarded funds.
