Small Group Experience - Week Two

Lesson Plan for Centers about Text Set

Purpose

This activity will help students become more aware of the obstacles people have had to face to accomplish their goals. Rotating centers permits students to have a hands on experience allowing for a deeper understanding of the content. The centers provide students with experiences to develop observation techniques, corporative learning skills, oral language skills, and critical thinking skills.

Multicultural/social justice component

The text set that these centers focus on provide students with a multicultural learning experience. Dr. Martin Luther Ling, Jr., Helen Keller, Leonardo da Vinci, Elijah McCoy, and the Wright Brothers represent different genders, races, and economic status. They all provide the reader with stories of people overcoming obstacles to reach their goals. Through the centers students are able to understand some of the obstacles that these people had to go though to obtain their goals.
