Shelter House
All of the people in the shelter were very busy, and often tired at the end of a long day. As a result, I was often asked to spend some time entertaining the children. Reading stories was one of their favorite activities. I enjoyed it too.
The second time that I volunteered at the shelter I spent the majority of the time helping in the office. I made an MS Excel worksheet including the information on various agencies that could provide services to shelter residents. I also answered phones and observed an intake interview. I learned a great deal as I listened to all the problems that had to be dealt with by both the staff and the residents.
The most labor intensive assignment that I was given involved organizing two of the donation/supply closets. Each one took over two hours to organize!! As I worked in the closets, I was surprised by the abundance of certain supplies and the complete (or near complete) lack of others.

For confidentiality reasons, Shelter House did not allow me to take photographs.
