Title: Hercules ¡V Project

Grade Level: 5th-6th

Purpose:

  • To help students extend their knowledge about the Labors of Heracles by integrating their knowledge about Heracles¡¦ Labors with their knowledge about P.E. exercises

Materials:

  • Books on P.E. activities
  • Handout ¡§Get Hercules Ready for His Tasks¡¨ for each student
  • Copy of Retold Classical Myths for each student
  • Paper/pens

Objectives:

  • TLW show his/her knowledge of the Labors of Hercules and P.E. exercises by choosing two labors and creating an exercise to prepare Hercules for each labor. 
  • In partners or groups of three, TLW prepare a presentation of their chosen labors and exercises and give justification for their choices.
  • TLW work cooperatively in his/her group by using ¡¥discussion¡¦/¡¥conflict management¡¦ skills to resolve differences within the group.

Procedure:

  • Attention-getter:
    • Bring the group to the Media Center (or outside, weather permitting)
    • Arrange seats in a circle (around the table, if possible)
    • Bring out the sheets of paper ¡V write ¡§Skills¡¨ on one and ¡§Exercises¡¨ on the other.
    • Have each student get out their handouts
    • Tell the students that today we will begin an exciting project.
      • Go over the handout as necessary
  • Activities:
    • As a group,
      • Brainstorm for ideas about the skills Hercules needed as a baby to defeat the serpents from Hera.
      • Make a list of possible exercises
        • Point out that they can be fantastical or realistic
    • Show them the P.E. books ¡V these are resources for them to use to get ideas.  They may also choose to work entirely from their own ideas.
    • Have them break up into groups
    • Have each group choose 2 labors and sign them up on the teacher¡¦s copy of the handout.
    • Allow the groups to work until the end of the class period.
      • As the groups work, move about the room to supervise and ask questions of the students.
  • Closure:
    • Remind students that their presentations are on Monday and they should continue to work in their ¡¥free¡¦ time.
    • Have students help with clean-up and return to classroom

Assessment:

  • On Monday (8 November) they will present their exercises and give justification for their choices.  This presentation will be evaluated for accuracy in matching the exercise to the skill needed and the students will receive a brief written response.
  • During group work time, the teacher will perform a visual inspection to see that students are working in a cooperative manner.

Diversity:

  • Students may use exercises/justifications that are indigenous to their native cultures.
  • The students are allowed to choose their own pair/group with the only stipulation that everyone must be included.

Teacher Evaluation:

  • The lesson will be complete when each pair/group of students is able to integrate myths and P.E. by creating/choosing two exercises to help Hercules prepare for his ¡¥Labors¡¦.
