William Asenjo, Jr. (PhD ’01) worked in private practice as a vocational rehabilitation consultant since 2000 and was an instructor and lecturer at The University of Iowa since 1994. He has worked as a freelance writer and editor for the past 20 years having been published in many books, magazines and journals, and wrote a column for the Wayland Reporter.
The flame was lit when Chicken Soup for the Single Soul was published with his story about volunteering to help an elderly blind gentleman who lived in New York City.
Community involvement and volunteering were important to Asenjo. He facilitated substance abuse groups at the Johnson County Jail and was a speaker at the Workplace Learning Connection Center in Iowa City.
One of Asenjo’s favorite movies was Freedom Writers because he believed that writing is “a vehicle to better understand ourselves and this journey we call life.” He facilitated writing workshops to spread the word about the benefits derived from writing your thoughts. He was developing plans to offer it to schools in Iowa’s Washington County.
Asenjo’s advisor, Professor Vilia Tarvydas said Bill was a talented and spirited man.”I always enjoyed time spent with him,” she said. “I appreciated the creativity and insights he brought to all his work. We shared many fine conversations and intellectual journeys.”
