Remembering Marijane Fall

Marijane FallFormer Counseling and Human Development Assistant Professor Marijane Fall, 69, passed away February 5, 2010.

Fall had a passion for people that led her to a career of helping people as an educator and counselor. She taught at The University of Iowa from 1992 to 1995, then at the University of Southern Maine, where she worked until she retired in 2007. A prolific researcher and author, Fall was considered a national expert in play therapy, including using the sand tray method, a form of therapy that uses miniature sand boxes for expression, in her classroom and while counseling clients.

Colleagues say Fall’s system of valuing people was contagious—you just felt better by being around her.

“Marijane was the kindest and most nurturant person I have ever known,” Professor Emeritus Nancy Jackson said.

In lieu of flowers, a scholarship fund in Fall’s memory has been established. Please make checks payable to: Wilminton Trust—Marijane Fall Scholarship. Mail tax-deductible contributions to Willington Trust, c/o Ameriprise Financial, 16 Casco St., Portland, ME 04101

Remembering Larry Stolurow

Larry StolurowProfessor Emeritus Lawrence M. Stolurow, 91, passed away August 14, 2009. During his long academic career Stolurow made many contributions to learning theory and research, the study of individual differences in abilities and mental retardation, computer-aided instruction, educational technology, and techniques for teaching foreign languages and basic information (e.g., WATTOO). He served as a professor of Instructional Design and Technology and as director of the Center for Educational Experimentation, Development, and Evaluation at The University of Iowa from 1977-1989.

“Larry had a strong commitment to advancing instructional practice through the use of computers, but his interests were even broader,“ Professor Robert L. Brennan said.

He had contracts or grants with IBM, the U. S. Naval Academy, and a precursor to what is now the U.S. Department of Education. The contract with the U.S. Naval Academy was particularly interesting, Brennan said, in that “it involved a three-year evalutaion, both formatively and summatively, in what was then the largest computer-aided, multimedia instructional effort that had ever been undertaken.”

In retirement, Stolurow launched a new career in jewelry making, first as a student, then as teaching assistant in the crafts center at the University of California–San Diego, next, as award winner in silver and gold jewelry, finally, as the featured artist in a one-man gallery exhibition on his 90th birthday.

“It was a fitting tribute for a creative, investigative, and dedicated spirit,” Brennan said.
