Guidelines for Authors


Goal:

The goal of the Journal is the timely dissemination of interdisciplinary research findings and their practical implications. The Journal is as a resource for educational leaders striving to maintain and to improve their leadership skills and is focused on improving Americašs schools.

Policy:

1. The Editorial Staff welcome articles on original research findings and informed opinion in education and related fields. Articles submitted for publication must meet three criteria: One, the article must contribute to knowledge, theory, and practice; Two, the article content must be accurate and scholarly; and Three, the article must conform to the editorial guidelines of the Journal.

An article submitted for publication in the Journal should not have appeared or be under consideration for publication in other journals. Practical implications of research results detailed in papers presented at meetings or conferences or published elsewhere are appropriate for submission. Citation of the original work must be included. After acceptance by the Journal, a paper or any portion of a paper may not be published elsewhere without prior written approval from the Editors. An article published in the Journal becomes the property of the Journal, with the Journal possessing exclusive right to publication. All copyrights will belong to the Journal.

2. Unless express written permission to the contrary is granted in advance by the Journal, each manuscript is accepted for review with the understanding that the Journal has the exclusive right of first refusal.

3. All manuscripts, if otherwise appropriate, will have all references to the author's name and affiliation removed and will be submitted for review to members of the Editorial Board and/or to invited reviewers selected for their specific interest, experience, and expertise.

4. The Journal reserves the right to edit manuscripts for brevity, clarity, and consideration of style.

Views expressed in manuscripts selected for publication in the Journal do not necessarily reflect the views of The University of Iowa, the College of Education, the Division of Planning, Policy and Leadership Studies, their officials, faculty members or staff. Views expressed in published articles are expressly those of the authors.

The Editorial Board is charged with advising the Editors on Journal policy and practice, determining the appropriateness of manuscripts, and participating in and supervising the manuscript review process. Board members will review manuscripts and personally select and supervise other reviewers. Board member representation will be national in scope.

Manuscript Guidelines

Articles submitted to the Journal of Research for Educational Leaders must be stylistically consistent and grammatically correct. The Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (4th ed.) is the required style of writing.

Manuscripts should comply with the Manual guidelines for nonsexist and nonethnic-biased language. Manuscripts are requested in P.C. compatible data form only. Articles may be submitted either on a 3.5" floppy disk, on Zip Disk, or as an e-mail attachment. Any version of Corel WordPerfect, Microsoft Word, or simple text is acceptable. Audio, Video and Graphics formats should be attached as separate files and should not be included in the document file. Technical questions should be addressed to Dr. Gerald Portman, jrel@uiowa.edu . Indenting: If a section or quotation is to be indented, use the Indent command in the word processing program. The indented section should be preceded and followed by a double carriage return. Avoid the use of Tabs and repeated use of the space bar.

Tables: If tables are used, use the Table feature in the word processing program. DO NOT use Tabs to align material to create tables. Tables and figures should be numbered, titled, and cited. The text should indicate where the table(s) should be inserted. If the word processing program does not have a Table feature, indicate how the table should appear:

Graphics: Graphics should be submitted in separate graphics files.

Audio and Video: Authors should contact the managing editor prior to submitting audio and video content to ensure optimum presentation of material.

Layout: Articles should be 15 pages or fewer in length; however, exceptions may be made when the topic and treatment so warrant. The title page should include the full title of the article, full name of the author(s), institutional affiliation(s) and position(s) held, a telephone number and an e-mail address where the author can be contacted, a statement of place and date of previous oral presentation of the paper, if any, and a disclaimer statement if applicable. To allow articles to be reviewed anonymously, identifying information should appear only on the title page. All correspondence will be directed to the first listed author.

The title of the article should appear at the top of the first page of the manuscript. The name of the author(s) should not appear on the first page of the article or any subsequent pages. Articles should be accompanied by a two to three sentence annotation describing the topic of the article and an abstract of approximately 150 words describing the purpose, objectives, findings, and implications and/or recommendations resulting from the research.

Once an article has been accepted for publication, the author will be asked to submit a final version of the article on 3.5" diskette or on Zip Disk and a copyright transfer. Materials will not be returned to the author unless a postage paid, self-addressed envelope is provided.
